The aircraft only earns money when it is moving

For a low-cost airline, a parked aircraft is an expensive asset generating little revenue. Short turnarounds allow more sectors per day and spread ownership, leasing and fixed crew costs across more flights. IATA research describes low-cost-carrier turnarounds as generally no more than about 30 minutes, although actual targets vary by airline, airport and aircraft.

Speed is not produced by skipping safety steps. It comes from designing the aircraft, schedule, airport process and passenger proposition around parallel working. A delayed bag, late fuel truck or missing passenger can break the sequence because many tasks are interdependent.

Planning begins before landing

The destination station receives passenger, baggage, fuel and technical information before arrival. A stand is allocated and ground teams position equipment. Cabin crew prepare the cabin, secure equipment and pass relevant information. Pilots calculate arrival and next-sector requirements.

Where procedures and airport rules permit, the aircraft may use a stand that supports independent manoeuvring or avoids a lengthy tow. Low-cost airlines often favour less-congested airports because stand availability and shorter taxi times improve predictability.

Two flows through one aircraft

After the doors open, passengers disembark while bags are removed. Some airlines use both forward and rear doors where the stand and local rules allow, reducing the distance people must travel through the cabin. Boarding may later use both doors for the same reason.

Pre-assigned seating, clear cabin-baggage rules and early gate preparation reduce hesitation. A full flight cannot board efficiently if passengers reach the aircraft before groups, documents and mobility assistance are organised.

Parallel ground tasks

Baggage unloading and loading, cabin cleaning, lavatory servicing, potable water, catering and engineering inspections are coordinated to overlap safely. Fuelling may occur with passengers boarding or on board only under approved procedures, with required supervision, communication and escape routes.

The captain and dispatcher review load information, weather, route, operational notices and fuel. The final loadsheet must reflect passengers, bags, cargo and fuel so take-off performance and centre of gravity are correct. These calculations cannot be guessed or rushed.

Why simple fleets help

Operating one aircraft family standardises door positions, holds, ground equipment, servicing points and crew procedures. Teams repeat the same sequence many times per day. Cabin layouts and galley arrangements can also be designed for a quick clean and limited catering exchange.

Low-cost airlines may use reduced onboard catering complexity, buy-on-board stock and minimal seat-pocket material. The objective is not to avoid cleaning but to reduce the number of items that must be replaced or reconciled at every stop.

What can stop a fast turn

Weather, air-traffic restrictions, an unavailable stand, late inbound passengers, baggage reconciliation, maintenance findings or special-assistance requirements can extend the process. Safety and accessibility obligations take priority over a stopwatch. A minor technical defect still requires assessment under approved maintenance procedures.

Boarding early does not always mean departing early. The aircraft needs clearance, closed holds and doors, accurate documents, a tug where pushback is required and a safe route onto the taxiway. One missing element holds the entire system.

The hidden cost of unrealistic targets

Excessive pressure can create rushed work, injuries, damaged equipment or errors. Airlines and contractors must provide staffing, training, fatigue controls and reporting systems. A turnaround target is only sustainable if normal variability and safety margins are built into the plan.

Cleaning contractors also face growing demands around waste separation and cabin presentation. Adding services without adding time or staff simply moves risk into another part of the process.

Consistency matters more than a record time

A spectacularly quick turnaround on one flight has little value if the schedule regularly collapses later. The commercial goal is repeatability: predictable stands, trained teams, reliable equipment and passengers who understand the process.

Fast turns are therefore an exercise in systems engineering. Every minute is designed, tasks run in parallel where safe, and information arrives before it is needed. The result looks simple from the terminal window because the complexity has been organised in advance.

The critical path

Turnaround managers identify the critical path: the sequence of tasks that directly determines the earliest possible departure. Some jobs have flexibility, while others cannot begin until a previous step finishes. The final baggage count, hold closure, loadsheet and door closure are common examples of linked milestones.

Measuring each stage allows the airline to find recurring delay causes. The purpose is not merely to demand faster work; it is to redesign stand allocation, staffing, equipment positioning or information flow so teams do not wait unnecessarily.

Passengers are part of the system

Oversized cabin bags, late arrival at the gate and seating disputes can consume minutes that the ground plan cannot recover. Clear baggage limits, gate checking and boarding groups aim to place bags and people in the cabin with less conflict.

Data continues after departure. Airlines compare scheduled and actual timestamps for doors opening, boarding, hold closure, pushback and take-off. Trends reveal whether a problem belongs to one airport, shift, supplier or flight profile. The strongest operation uses those findings to improve planning and contracts while protecting a just culture in which staff can report hazards. Sustainable speed comes from removing waste, not concealing mistakes.

Connections create a further constraint at hub airports. A fast aircraft turn is commercially pointless if incoming passengers and bags cannot reach the gate safely. Network carriers may deliberately schedule more ground time than a point-to-point low-cost airline because they protect connecting flows. Turnaround performance must therefore be compared within the airline’s business model, not as a universal league table.
