A runway is covered in markings that can look decorative or repetitive from an aircraft window, but each one is part of a standardised visual language. Numbers identify the runway direction. Threshold stripes show where the landing runway begins. Centreline markings help alignment. Aiming-point blocks give pilots a prominent touchdown reference. Touchdown-zone markings provide distance and position cues. Holding-position markings tell aircraft where the protected runway environment begins. Together with lights and signs, these markings help pilots interpret a large piece of pavement quickly, including at night, in rain and during high-workload phases of flight.[1][2]
Why runway markings are standardised
Pilots routinely operate at airports they may never have visited before. The surface language therefore has to be predictable. FAA AC 150/5340-1 defines U.S. airport-marking standards, while ICAO Annex 14 and visual-aid material provide the international framework used across much of the world.[1][3]
National details can differ, but the central principle is consistency: the meaning of a threshold, centreline or holding position should not depend on local artistic choice.
Why runway markings are generally white
White is conventionally used for runway markings, while yellow is widely used for taxiway centrelines and runway holding positions. The colour difference lets crews distinguish the high-speed runway environment from taxi guidance even before reading a sign.
At night, reflective glass beads and runway lighting reinforce the painted information.
Runway designation numbers
The large number near the threshold identifies the runway’s approximate magnetic orientation. A runway facing approximately 270 degrees magnetic is normally designated 27. The reciprocal end is approximately 090 degrees and therefore designated 09.
Parallel runways use suffixes such as L, C and R. These labels give controllers and pilots unambiguous operational identifiers for surfaces that may lie only a few hundred metres apart.
Threshold markings
The threshold is the beginning of the portion of runway available for landing. White longitudinal stripes—sometimes informally called piano keys—make the threshold conspicuous. Their number and arrangement depend on runway width under the applicable standard.[1]
The threshold is not necessarily the physical beginning of the pavement. A runway can have a displaced threshold, leaving pavement before it that may be usable for taxi or takeoff but not for touchdown from that approach direction.
The threshold bar
Where required, a transverse threshold bar clearly identifies the landing threshold. It becomes especially important when the threshold is displaced from the pavement end or when surrounding pavement could make the start of the landing area ambiguous.
Displaced-threshold arrows
White arrows leading toward a displaced threshold tell pilots that the pavement before the threshold is not part of the landing touchdown area in that direction. Depending on the airport and published status, that pavement can still be available for takeoff, rollout from the opposite direction or taxi.
This is why seeing pavement before the threshold does not mean a landing aircraft should touch down on it.
Demarcation bars
A demarcation bar can separate runway pavement from a blast pad, stopway or other area that is not intended for normal aircraft movement in the same way as the runway. Colour and pattern communicate that the surface beyond has a different operational status.
Chevron markings
Large yellow chevrons identify pavement areas such as blast pads or stopways that are not available for normal taxi, takeoff or landing. The pavement may physically support some loads, but its marked status tells pilots not to treat it as usable runway.
This is a crucial distinction: pavement appearance alone does not determine operational availability.
Runway centreline
The dashed white centreline provides the primary visual reference for longitudinal alignment. During takeoff, pilots use it to maintain runway tracking. During landing, it helps judge drift and lateral position.
On precision runways, inset centreline lights can supplement the painted line for night and low-visibility operations.
Why the centreline is dashed
A dashed pattern remains conspicuous while allowing pilots to perceive motion and distance along the runway. Standardised stripe and gap dimensions create a familiar visual rhythm. The markings are designed as operational cues rather than a continuous road-style lane line.
Aiming-point markings
The large rectangular white blocks on either side of the centreline are aiming-point markings. They provide a prominent visual reference during final approach. A pilot may visually aim toward the vicinity of these markings while the aircraft’s flare and geometry cause the actual wheel touchdown to occur farther along the runway.
They should not be described as a mandatory point where the wheels must contact the surface.
Touchdown-zone markings
Touchdown-zone markings appear as groups of white bars arranged symmetrically about the centreline on qualifying runways. They give pilots additional longitudinal cues after the threshold and help assess where the aircraft is likely to touch down.
The pattern changes progressively with distance, allowing trained crews to interpret runway position rapidly.
Why touchdown location matters
Landing performance assumes the aircraft touches down within defined operational parameters. A long float consumes runway before braking begins. That is why airlines use stabilised-approach and touchdown-zone criteria rather than accepting any touchdown simply because runway remains ahead.
Markings help crews judge that position visually.
Runway edge markings
Continuous white edge stripes identify the lateral limits of the runway surface on runways where they are required. They become particularly useful when runway shoulders, adjacent pavement or snow-covered surroundings could make the usable width difficult to judge.
At night, runway edge lights provide the corresponding luminous boundary.
Runway shoulder markings
Some large airports have paved shoulders outside the runway edge. These support erosion control and can accommodate jet blast or occasional loading, but they are not the normal aircraft operating surface. Markings and edge lines help distinguish them from the full-strength runway.
Why shoulders matter for large aircraft
Wide-engine aircraft can place nacelles close to the runway edge. Shoulders reduce the risk of engines ingesting loose material from unpaved ground and help manage pavement-edge erosion caused by jet blast.
The required geometry depends on aircraft design group and airport standard.[4]
Taxiway centreline markings
Taxiway centrelines are generally yellow, immediately differentiating them from white runway centrelines. They guide aircraft between stands, aprons and runways. At runway entrances the taxiway line interacts with holding-position markings and signs.
Pilots do not follow a yellow line across a runway holding position unless appropriately cleared.
Runway holding-position markings
The familiar holding position consists of four yellow lines: two solid and two dashed. An aircraft approaching the runway from the solid-line side must stop unless authorised to cross or enter. When leaving the runway from the dashed side, the aircraft continues across the marking to become clear of the runway environment.
This directional meaning is why the solid/dashed arrangement matters.
Why runway holding positions are placed where they are
The line is not necessarily placed immediately at the pavement edge. It is positioned to protect the runway safety area, obstacle-free zones and, where applicable, instrument-landing-system critical areas. Aircraft waiting at the line must remain clear of protected operational space.
ILS critical-area markings
At airports with instrument landing systems, special holding positions can protect the localiser or glideslope signal from interference by aircraft or vehicles during low-visibility operations. Surface markings and signs identify where traffic may need to hold.
The exact procedure depends on airport and ATC requirements.
Enhanced taxiway centreline markings
At certain runway approaches, additional dashed yellow lines appear alongside the normal taxiway centreline before the holding position. These enhanced markings increase awareness that the aircraft is approaching a runway boundary.
They are one of several runway-incursion mitigation measures designed to attract pilot attention during surface movement.
Surface-painted holding signs
Some airports paint runway identifiers directly onto the taxiway surface near a holding position. These markings supplement vertical signs and can be especially useful where cockpit geometry or complex intersections make signage harder to acquire.
Why markings are supplemented by signs
Paint can be obscured by snow, rubber, water or viewing angle. Signs provide another independent information channel. Mandatory instruction signs use distinctive colour conventions, while location and direction signs help crews confirm where they are and where a taxi route leads.[5]
Airport surface safety depends on these layers reinforcing each other.
Why markings need glass beads
Reflective media can be incorporated into airfield paint so markings return more light toward an aircraft’s landing or taxi lights. This improves conspicuity at night and in wet conditions.
The paint itself must also withstand ultraviolet exposure, jet blast, tyre traffic, de-icing chemicals and repeated maintenance.
Rubber can hide markings
Touchdown-zone rubber contamination can darken white markings. Airports inspect and clean surfaces so critical visual cues remain recognisable. Rubber removal has to balance marking visibility, pavement friction and the risk of damaging the underlying surface.
Snow creates a different challenge
Snow can cover paint entirely. Winter airports therefore rely heavily on snow-clearing priorities, runway lights, signs and reported runway status. Markings remain essential once exposed, but the airport system cannot assume paint will always be visible.
Closed-runway markings
A prominent X is used to indicate a runway or taxiway closure under applicable standards. Temporary closures can use approved visual devices, while permanent closures may involve painted markings and changes to lighting and published aeronautical data.
The objective is to make it visually obvious that pavement resembling a runway is not available for operation.
Why abandoned pavement is dangerous
From the air, an old runway can still look convincing even after it is no longer operational. Closure markings, removed lighting and published chart changes reduce the risk of pilots mistaking it for the active surface.
Temporarily displaced thresholds
Construction or pavement work can temporarily move the landing threshold. Airports use approved markings and lighting to show the revised usable runway. The UK CAA’s Skyway Code illustrates how pre-threshold markings distinguish pavement that is or is not available for aircraft movement.[6]
NOTAMs and aerodrome information then communicate the operational change beyond the visual surface cues.
Why pilots brief airport diagrams
Markings are easier to interpret when the crew already understands the airport geometry. Before taxi, pilots review expected runways, intersections, hotspots and taxi routes. The surface markings then confirm that mental model rather than being the crew’s first exposure to the layout.
Low-visibility operations
In fog, pilots may see only a small section of pavement ahead. Centreline lights, stop bars, signs and low-visibility taxi procedures become especially important. Painted markings remain part of the system, but their visible range is naturally reduced.
Surface movement guidance is therefore deliberately redundant.
Why airports repaint so often
Tyres, weather, ultraviolet light, snowploughs, de-icing chemicals and jet blast degrade markings. Airports monitor colour, coverage and reflectivity and repaint as needed. Work must be coordinated around runway availability because paint needs suitable surface conditions and curing time.
Markings are part of runway-incursion prevention
A runway incursion can occur when an aircraft, vehicle or person is incorrectly present on the protected runway surface. Clear holding-position markings, signs, lighting and procedures help prevent that chain from developing.
No marking can replace correct clearance and situational awareness, but good visual design reduces ambiguity.
Why there are so many visual layers
Runway numbers, centreline paint, edge stripes, threshold bars, PAPI, signs and lights may appear redundant because they often communicate related information. That redundancy is intentional. Different cues remain visible under different lighting, weather and cockpit-view conditions.
Aviation safety rarely depends on one perfect signal when several independent cues can reinforce the same interpretation.
The bigger lesson
A runway is not just a long rectangle of pavement. Its markings turn it into an organised operating surface. White paint identifies landing geometry and alignment. Yellow markings protect runway boundaries and guide taxi movement. Chevrons and closure symbols identify pavement that must not be treated as an active runway. Signs and lights repeat the most important information.
Once those conventions are understood, the apparently random collection of stripes and blocks becomes a readable language—one designed so that a crew arriving from another country can rapidly understand where the usable runway begins, where it ends, where the aircraft should aim and, critically, where it must stop before entering.
