Taxiing a large airliner around a major airport is a navigation task in its own right. The aircraft can be moving through a maze of taxiways, runways, holding points, aprons and low-visibility routes while the pilots are also completing checklists, talking to ATC and monitoring other traffic. Airport signs and pavement markings turn that surface network into a standardised visual language. The FAA’s current Pilot’s Guide to Airport Signs & Markings and Aeronautical Information Manual define the colours, shapes and meanings used to tell pilots where they are, which direction a taxiway leads, where a runway begins and exactly where the aircraft must stop. The system deliberately uses different colour logic for different jobs. Black signs with yellow inscriptions identify the surface the aircraft is currently on. Yellow signs with black inscriptions and arrows point toward other taxiways or destinations. Red signs with white inscriptions are mandatory instruction signs associated with runways, critical areas or prohibited entry. Yellow pavement markings guide taxiing and define holding positions. Understanding those distinctions prevents one of the most serious surface errors an aircraft can make: entering a runway without clearance.
Why taxiways use yellow
FAA standards use yellow for taxiway centre lines, edge markings and holding positions. Runway operational markings are predominantly white, giving pilots an immediate colour distinction between runway and taxiway environments. [3]
The colour system is designed to remain recognisable in daylight, rain and night lighting conditions.
The taxiway centre line
A normal taxiway centre line is a continuous yellow line. FAA AIM guidance states that the aircraft should generally be kept centred over it, but also warns that centre-line tracking alone does not guarantee wingtip clearance from other aircraft or objects. [2]
Large aircraft crews therefore use both the centre line and awareness of aircraft geometry.
Why wingtip clearance remains the pilot’s concern
Taxiways are designed for specified aircraft categories, but temporary equipment, parked aircraft or construction can reduce available clearance. A nose wheel exactly on the yellow line does not prove the wingtips are clear.
ATC clearance also does not transfer responsibility for avoiding an obvious obstacle to the controller.
Enhanced taxiway centre lines
At many larger commercial airports, the centre line becomes visually enhanced before a runway holding position. Parallel yellow dashes appear on each side of the normal centre line, warning the crew that a runway boundary is approaching.
FAA AIM guidance states that the enhancement can extend up to 150 feet before the holding-position marking and exists to alert pilots to prepare to stop unless cleared onto or across the runway. [2]
The runway holding-position marking
The most important pavement marking during taxi is the familiar pattern of four yellow lines across the taxiway: two solid lines and two dashed lines.
When approaching from the solid-line side, the aircraft must not cross without the required runway clearance. The marking is the physical boundary of runway-protected space.
Why solid and dashed lines are arranged differently
The solid lines face traffic approaching the runway, visually reinforcing the stop requirement. The dashed side faces aircraft leaving the runway.
Once an aircraft has completely crossed the holding position while exiting, it has cleared the runway for ATC purposes under the applicable procedure.
Red mandatory instruction signs
A sign with white characters on a red background means the pilot is approaching a mandatory boundary or instruction. Runway holding signs are the most familiar example and display the runway designators ahead.
Red is deliberately reserved for information where entering without authorisation could create an immediate runway or protected-area hazard.
Runway holding-position signs
At a taxiway intersection with a runway, the red sign shows the runway numbers. If the taxiway approaches the runway near one end, the sign can show both runway directions separated by a dash.
The sign is positioned next to the holding-position marking so the pilot has both vertical and pavement confirmation.
Why runway numbers appear in both directions
A physical runway has two directional designations roughly 180 degrees apart. At a crossing point, the sign identifies the runway surface regardless of which direction is currently active for take-off or landing.
The crew needs to know which runway they are about to enter, not simply which runway is in use.
No-entry signs
A red sign with a white horizontal bar indicates that aircraft entry is prohibited from that direction. It can protect one-way taxi routes, wrong-way runway entries or pavement not suitable for the aircraft.
It is a mandatory sign rather than advisory information.
ILS critical-area holding signs
During low-visibility operations, aircraft and vehicles can disturb the radio signals used by an Instrument Landing System if they move too close to the localiser or glideslope antenna. Airports therefore establish ILS critical-area holding positions.
When ATC instructs an aircraft to hold short of the critical area, the crew stops at the dedicated marking and sign rather than the ordinary runway boundary.
The ILS critical-area pavement marking
The FAA Pilot’s Guide depicts the ILS critical-area holding position as a distinctive yellow ladder-like marking across the taxiway. [1]
This helps distinguish it from the four-line runway holding marking.
Approach-area holding positions
A taxiway can pass through the extended approach or departure area of a runway without physically crossing the pavement. An aircraft parked there could still interfere with low-flying traffic or protected obstacle-clearance surfaces.
Some airports therefore use holding positions that keep aircraft clear of runway approach areas when instructed by ATC.
Location signs answer “where am I?”
A taxiway location sign has a black background with yellow inscription and a yellow border. If the sign says A, the aircraft is on Taxiway A.
The FAA AIM explicitly defines black/yellow signs as location signs identifying the taxiway or runway on which the aircraft is currently located. [2]
Why location signs are black
The colour difference helps pilots avoid confusing current position with direction. Black background means “you are here”; yellow background generally means “go this way”.
This simple mnemonic is useful during fast-moving taxi instructions.
Direction signs answer “which way?”
A direction sign has a yellow background, black inscription and arrow. It identifies the taxiway reached by turning in the indicated direction.
Several direction panels can appear together at a complex intersection, arranged so arrows correspond logically to the physical branches ahead.
Why signs can be grouped together
A location sign can be installed beside multiple direction signs. The pilot can therefore read the whole intersection in one glance: current taxiway in black, possible exits in yellow.
Runway holding signs can also be collocated where appropriate.
Destination signs
Destination signs point toward areas such as terminals, cargo ramps, military facilities or runways. They use yellow backgrounds with black text and arrows.
They supplement taxiway designations by telling crews where a route ultimately leads.
Information signs
Airports can use information signs for operational details not covered by the main mandatory, location or direction categories. The exact wording is standardised by airport-sign guidance.
Pilots should not confuse an information sign with a red mandatory sign.
Surface-painted location signs
At complex intersections, airports can paint a black rectangle with yellow taxiway designation directly onto the pavement. This supplements the roadside sign and confirms which taxiway the aircraft is on.
FAA guidance places these markings on the right side of the centre line when needed. [2]
Surface-painted direction signs
Yellow panels with black taxiway identifiers and arrows can also be painted on the pavement. These are useful where cockpit viewing angle, intersection complexity or sign clutter makes additional guidance valuable.
The pavement marking repeats the same colour logic as the vertical sign.
Surface-painted holding-position signs
Some airports paint red runway-designation panels on the taxiway before the holding point. These reinforce the fact that the aircraft is approaching a runway boundary.
They do not replace the actual hold marking or ATC clearance requirement.
Taxiway edge markings
When the edge of usable taxiway pavement is not obvious, yellow edge markings define it. A continuous double yellow line separates full-strength taxiway from pavement not intended for aircraft use.
FAA standards distinguish this from dashed double-yellow edge markings, which indicate adjoining pavement may be used by aircraft, such as between a taxiway and apron. [3]
Why shoulder pavement can be deceptive
A paved shoulder can look wide enough to taxi on but may not have the structural strength to carry an airliner’s landing-gear loads. Edge markings tell the pilot where the usable full-strength taxiway ends.
Crossing the continuous edge without authorisation or operational need can therefore create pavement and aircraft damage risk.
Taxiway/taxiway holding positions
ATC can require aircraft to hold at the intersection of two taxiways. Dedicated markings can indicate that position where operationally necessary.
The crew stops when instructed even though no runway is involved.
Geographic position markings
Low-visibility Surface Movement Guidance and Control System routes can include geographic position markings. FAA AIM guidance describes them as coded circular pavement markings used to identify exact points along designated low-visibility taxi routes. [2]
They help pilots and controllers confirm where the aircraft is when visual reference is severely restricted.
Low visibility changes surface navigation
In dense fog, crews may see only a short stretch of centre line and the next illuminated sign. Airports therefore combine signs, markings, taxiway centre-line lighting, stop bars and surface radar into a layered guidance system.
Published low-visibility taxi routes simplify the number of decisions crews have to make.
Taxiway centre-line lights
Although this article focuses on signs and markings, lighting complements the same system. Green centre-line lights can guide aircraft along taxiways at night and in low visibility.
Near runways, colour changes and stop bars provide additional cues depending on the airport lighting standard.
Stop bars
A stop bar is a row of red lights across a taxiway at a runway holding position. When illuminated, it is a positive stop signal and should not be crossed.

Runway guard lights
Alternating or flashing yellow runway guard lights can draw attention to a runway holding position. They are particularly valuable at complex intersections and during reduced visibility.
They warn of the runway but do not themselves constitute a crossing clearance.
Hot spots
Airport charts can identify surface locations with a history or risk of confusion, known as hot spots. Complex sign layouts, unusual taxiway geometry or closely spaced runways can contribute.
Crews brief hot spots before taxi so they are prepared for the visual cues they will encounter.
Why ATC reads taxi routes using letters
Taxiways are designated with letters or combinations of letters. A clearance such as “Alpha, Bravo, hold short Runway 27” maps directly onto the signs and pavement identifiers the pilots see outside.
The standard language connects radio instruction with physical surface navigation.
Readback of hold-short instructions
Runway hold-short clearances require precise readback because misunderstanding can lead directly to a runway incursion. Pilots repeat the runway designator and holding instruction so the controller can detect an error before the aircraft reaches the boundary.
The signs and markings then provide the visual confirmation of where that verbal instruction applies.
Why crews stop before the line, not on it
The holding-position marking defines the protected boundary. A large aircraft’s nose can be short of the paint while its wing or tail extends beyond it if the crew judges position poorly.
Pilots therefore use cockpit reference points and airport procedures to ensure the entire aircraft remains clear where required.
Runway crossing clearance is explicit
Being cleared to taxi toward a runway does not automatically authorise crossing it. ATC phraseology requires an explicit runway crossing or entry clearance under applicable procedures.
The red sign and four-line pavement marking are the final visual barrier against assumption.
Why an active runway is not the only dangerous runway
A runway not currently used for take-offs or landings can still be occupied by vehicles, used for taxi, or become active after an ATC change. Pilots therefore treat runway boundaries according to clearance, not according to their personal impression of whether the runway looks quiet.
Mandatory signs remain mandatory regardless of perceived traffic.
Signs are designed for cockpit viewing distance
FAA AC 150/5340-18H specifies standards for airport sign systems, including design and installation requirements. [4]
Letter size, colour, illumination and siting are engineered so pilots can identify information early enough to act.
Marking dimensions are standardised too
FAA AC 150/5340-1M is the active U.S. standard for runway, taxiway and apron markings. [5]
Standardisation reduces the mental workload of moving between airports because pilots do not have to learn a completely different visual language at every destination.
Why taxiway signs can look confusing in photographs
A photo may show several panels with arrows, letters and runway numbers together. Read as separate colour-coded functions, the logic becomes much simpler.
Black identifies present location, yellow directs, and red commands or protects.
The airport map completes the system
Signs and markings tell the crew what is immediately outside; the airport chart provides the overall geometry. Pilots compare both continuously so a sign that does not match their expected route becomes an immediate cue to stop and resolve the discrepancy.
This prevents “press-on” taxiing after a missed turn.
Electronic airport maps
Many modern airliners display own-ship position on an electronic airport moving map. This improves situational awareness, especially at night or complex hubs.
The moving map supplements rather than replaces outside signs and markings because database, position or display faults remain possible.
Why crews ask ATC when uncertain
The safest response to surface uncertainty is to stop in a safe place and ask for clarification rather than guess. ATC can provide progressive taxi instructions or confirm the route.
A delayed taxi is far less serious than an unauthorised runway entry.
A visual language built to prevent runway incursions
The airport surface may appear chaotic from a terminal window, but the markings follow a strict grammar. A yellow centre line provides the path. Black signs confirm where the aircraft is. Yellow signs point toward the next taxiway. Red signs identify boundaries that require explicit authority. Enhanced centre lines warn that one of those boundaries is approaching, and the four-line holding marking tells the crew exactly where it is.
That standardised language lets pilots operate at unfamiliar airports around the world while maintaining the same basic mental model. The signs are not decorative airport furniture; they are part of the runway-incursion prevention system and one of the most important navigation aids used before an aircraft even leaves the ground.
